Adoptees Help Foster Sisters Prepare for College

December 2011 was an extra special time for four former Wednesday's Child participants and their adoptive parents. They volunteered to shop for and donate college dorm items for two sisters who are leaving foster care to attend college.

Harvey, Alyssa, Zachary, and Jazmine and their mom delivered a trunk-sized load of new bedding, school supplies, personal care items and a few snacks for two teenaged girls they do not know, but for whom they enjoyed serving as secret shoppers. It was a mission they were excited to serve because five years ago, these teens were in foster care themselves.

In the summer of 2006, Harvey, Alyssa, Zachary, and Jazmine met their third set of caregivers--a couple who had recently been certified as foster parents. After spending a season getting to know Scott and Tracy and their extended family, the children and the parents knew they wanted it to be a lifelong arrangement. Because Tracy and Scott planned on adopting from foster care whenever that opportunity presented, the transition happened naturally for all of them. Within six months, the adoption finalized.

Over five years later, the children, now all teenagers, are giving back to other youth who need a little extra assistance as they approach campus life. Their thoughtful gifts included granola snacks and extra dark Godiva chocolate--universal comfort food for a student facing term papers and tests. Thanks for your generosity and thoughtfulness!
