Adoption from foster care takes patience and endurance. Ask yourself, "Will I adopt even if this particular child is placed with another family?" If the answer is no, you should probably not consider adoption from foster care. You will need a home study performed within the state in which you reside and that takes 1-3 months.
- Check with your local child welfare office to see if they offer home study services and training.
- Check with local adoption agencies in your area to see if they have experience preparing home studies for older child adoption.
In reality, by the time your home study and preparation for parenting a child with special needs is completed, the child you identified may have already been placed with a family.
